Over 70-80 families benefiting from the SWP-S1 Water Purification unit. As this area was very badly effected by the Tsunami and 90% of the wells were destroyed /contaminated and people have to travel long distance for drinking water.

This accounts for 10 units leaving a balance of 10 units from the first
consignment of 20 units. We have scheduled installation of 6 more units in the Batticaloa District, which is extremely badly affected by the tsunami. The balance 4 units will be installed along the South West coast to make up the 20 units. Details of location and statistics of those benefiting from each of the installed units will be provided as installation occurs. Due to a glitch in the camera, we were unable to record the installation of 7 units, but have made arrangements to have photographs taken to identify each location before the end of this month

Enclosed are photographs of some of the installations of these 20 units. In total, 30 units have been installed leaving a balance of 10 units, pending identification of locations by the Rotary Club of Jaffna. Also enclosed are photographs of St. John’s School from my previous trip.

It must be noted that the second lot of 20 units were cleared on the 18th of March and have had very little time to plan and identify worthy recipients of the equipment. However, we have managed to discharge our mandate satisfactorily, and with the cooperation of Jaffna Rotarians (sooner than later), we should bring relief to ten more locations devastated by the tsunami.

The installation of these units have involved a total travel distance of 1979 kms and 7 field days, hotel accommodation to cover the two trips. If the balance sites are identified soon, we could undertake the journey up North to complete the assignment before the end of April as previously targeted.

I wish to thank Rtn. PP Sonny Ockersz of Rotary Club of Batticaloa and Rtn. President Pushpa Loganathan of Rotary Club of Kalmunai for identifying locations and providing guides to navigate us to the predetermined locations. Without their help, we could not accomplish this task as quickly and efficiently as we have. We thank them sincerely.
