The Rotary Year 2010-11 is the Golden Jubilee year for the Rotary Club of Colombo West. The project 'Sight-at-50' is the flag-ship project chosen by the club to mark the dawn of the Jubilee, which enables residents from very low-income families in the City of Colombo to receive eye sight through cataract surgery. On the 27th July 2010, the Phase 1 of the project was carried out with 50 surgical operations performed by a well-known specialist eye-surgeon.

With the support of Municipal Special Commissioner, the services provided by his dedicated medical staff and free facilities at Hema's Hospital, the Rotary Club of Colombo West was able to carry out this project very successfully. The club financed the entire operation by donating cataract lenses, medicine, accessories, meals and transport facilities to 50 senior citizes.

The beneficiaries are over fifty years old and are living with their low-income families. They were carefully selected by the doctors of the municipality health care centres. President Pradeep and Rotarians of Colombo West, Municipality Special Commissioner, 4 doctors, nurses and many others were present at the hospital to witness and ensure successful completion of the surgery. After the operations the eyes of the beneficiaries were full of tears with the unexplicable joy of the new sight and with gratitute to the Rotary.

The Rotary Club of Colombo West is now planning for the second phase of the project to donate eye lenses and provide for all relevant costs to 50 more elders from very low income families in Colombo, with a firm hope that we have the support of our sister clubs.
