RCCW Community Service Project on Dengue Awareness
The first phase of the Dengue Awareness Campaign was carried out on Saturday 17th July. It was aimed at creating awareness among Colombo city dwellers on the spread of dengue fever to save lives. This campaign is spearheaded by Rotary District 3220 and the Municipal Council of Colombo.
The Rotary Club of Colombo West was allocated the city section of Mutwal and Mattakkuliya where, during the last 6 months, 19 residents have died of dengue fever. President Pradeep, 15 Rotarians and Anns, 20 Rotaractors and Intractors from Moratuwa University, Asian International School and St. Bridget's, 8 KIK employees representing Rtn.Lalith, 20 schoolchildren and some health workers participated in this event that Saturday morning.
House-to-house visits covering nearly 3000 households were made by 35 groups, each consisting of 4 to 6 persons. They gave advice and useful leaflets to residents, creating a greater need for the communities living in these areas to be more vigilant and aware of this dangerous disease to their families. The different groups of Rotarians along with the helpers searched for potentially dangerous breeding places of mosquitoes, and provided information to the municipal health workers for prompt action.
The first phase of the campaign was indeed a great success due to the active participation and firm dedication of all those who participated. A 'Big Thank You" to all of them. This program was repeated on Saturday 24th July in Colombo West. I thank all participants for their unstinting support for this worthy cause, which would not be successful if not for the participation of all those concerned.
