Building Community through Literacy

It was a bright and sunny morning on the 6th of July 2010 when the children of Kopay Christian School stood along the road within the compound of the school to welcome the delegation from the Federation of Malaysians of Sri Lankan Origin (FOMSO) and the Rotary Club of Colombo West. Members of the delegation were garlanded by the schoolchildren and led by the school band to the function hall. After lighting the traditional oil lamp, the delegation was ushered to their seats on the stage. Prayer of praise and worship was followed by the national anthem.

The Principal of Kopay Christian School made his welcome address and commended both FOMSO and the Rotary Club of Colombo West for their continued support towards the welfare of the students. The speakers from both organizations addressed the audience and pledged their unstinting support to do whatever was necessary to uplift the educational standards of the children of the north and play a part in "Building Community through Literacy."

FOMSO and the Rotary Club of Colombo West have joined as partners to serve the IDP children and bring harmony and peace. Literacy is the best tool, hence providing computers and English education took centre stage. They have provided English software to 4 selected schools and computers to 6 schools.

1) Kopay Christian School - 1 computer with English software, TV and a laptop
2) Ramavil IDP School – 2 computers and one with English software, TV
3) Jaffna Kamalasani Vidyalayam – 2 computers and one with English software, TV
4) Uduvil Girls College – 2 computers and one with English software, TV
5) Kaddudai Saiva Vidyalayam – 1 computer.
6) Vaazhvaham Blind School – 1 computer

All schools except Vaazhvaham and Ramavil accommodate IDP children in their schools.

President of FOMSO and Rotarian Past President Dato Kulasegaran presented the computers to the children.

The vice principal proposed the vote of thanks.

Once the ceremony was over, the delegation informally chatted with the principals and children of the 6 schools. The team then went on to visit the Jaffna National Library to hand over the token gift books to the library.

The consignment of books for the library and uniforms for the schoolchildren have already arrived at the port, and are in the process of being cleared. Once this is done, these items will be given to the respective institutions.
