
Landmine Crisis in Sri Lanka
One of Sri Lanka Foundation of the USA together with the Rotary Club of Colombo West and the Colombo West and the Humpty Dumpty institute of USA are partnering a project to commence de- mining in the war torn North and East.
The one Sri Lanka Foundation is an international organization founded in 2002.The foundation is a tangible grass- roots organization committed making a difference to war torn communities in Sri Lanka. Since it’s humble beginnings in mid 2002.it has provided 240 wheel chairs to land mine, polio other disabled victims in Sri Lanka in partnership with the rotary Club of Colombo West, The wheel chair foundation in Danville, California and generous donations from Sri Lankans domiciled in the San Francisco Bay area.

The Rotary Club of Colombo west Charted in July 1961 is the largest single club in Sri Lanka with a membership of 111 consisting mainly of professionals and businessmen. One of the recent humanitarian projects carried out by the club include the distribution of 240 wheel chairs to disabled in Sri Lanka including the North and East and the disabled soldiers of the Ranaviru Sevana.
The Humpty Dumpty institute of USA is also a non –profit organization head quarted in New York City with its primary focus forge unique public private partnerships that help creative solutions to complex problems. The HDI works closely with the US Congress and the united Nations
The de- mining will be carried out by the uk based de-mining experts, the HALO Trust who have had extensive experience in de-mining in many other countries including Eritrea Somalia, Cambodia, Afghanistan to name a few
A 20 km Stretch of minded land in the Jaffna Peninsula has already been for this purpose and the launching of the 1st stage of the project will be in New York on 2nd February 2003 during Sri Lankan Independence Day Celebrations and de-mining is expected to commence during the early part of March 2003.
HALO is only mine clearance agency registered in Sri Lanka. HALO aims initially to deploy nine manual teams , three mechanical units,3vegetation cutters and employ a staff of over 300. |
