RCCW Jubilee Year 2010-11
Community Service Project
Sight-at-50

Rotary Club of Colombo West is celebrating it's 50th Jubilee year. Sight-at-50, is a fitting flag-ship project chosen by President Pradeep to mark the dawn of the Jubilee, enabling fifty residents from low-income families in the City of Colombo to receive eye sight through cataract surgery. On the 27th July 2010, the surgical operations were performed at Hemas Hospital in Wattala by a well-known specialist eye-surgeon Dr. Ameratunge. With their services provided free-of-charge and the support of Municipal Special Commissioner and his dedicated medical staff headed by Dr/Mrs Wickramasinghe, Rotary Club of Colombo West was able to carry out this project very successfully. The club financed the entire operation by donating 50 cataract lenses, medicine, accessories, meals and transport facilities.

The beneficiaries are over fifty years old and are living with their low-income families. They were carefully selected by the doctors of the municipality health care centres. On the 27th, the fifty beneficiaries of Sight-at-50 arrived at the Municipality HCD Head office, Slave Island to participate in a brief inaugration ceremony with President and Rotarians of Colombo West, Municipality Special Commissioner, doctors, nurses and many others. They were served brekfast and after the ceremony, the buses carrying the patients left HCD and reached the Hemas Hospital by 8.30 a.m. They were followed by Rotarians, Municipal Special Commissioner and health workers. The operations were performed sucessfully. After the operations lunch was served to all patients at the hospital and the eyes that could not see for many years upto that momonet were full of tears with the joy of sight and with gratitute to the Rotary.
